Self Sovereign Artists in the Age of AI

It currently seems that artists and other creative workers are at the greatest risk of losing out in the current LLM-based AI revolution. Many artists and creatives complain that their copyright is violated when foundational models are developed and users can replicate their style or even specific creations. On the other hand some artists are embracing the technology and view LLMs as just another artistic tool to go alongside the paintbrush and chisel. Examples here include AI Generated Art winning Colorado State Fair's annual art competition [1] and the Sony World Photography Awards [2].

What is art in the age of AI? This is a big question that will be discussed at length by artists and technologists alike. In this project we will tackle a simpler questions which we outline below. These are based around 'Self Sovereignty' the notion that users can truly own their digital identities and data. Some potentially useful tools for hashing a file and creating NFTs can be found below in the Resources.

List of Research questions

  • How can the notion of Self Sovereignty be applied to artists in an AI context?
  • Can any of the technologies associated with Self Sovereignty including blockchains, Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs), Solid enable artists to become truly Self Sovereign.
  • Can Knowledge Graphs aid in providing machine-readable descriptions of the art, artists or context also help?
  • How does support differ for 'normal' artists whose work may be sucked up when a foundational model is trained and a GenAI artists (and artist using GenAI to create work)?
